Scope and Content

The book contains a collection of papers for the Sudbury Region in history, geology, mineral exploration, environmental damage, natural recovery after emission reduction, restpration, research topics, and future planning

Context

The re-greening process began in 1971. Shortly after Laurentian University was founded in 1960, Sudbury's sulphur dioxide emission levels reached 2.5 million tonnes. Scientists from Laurentian then began testing combinations of soil, amendments, and plant species in plots to start the process of re-greening to offset the negative impacts from the sulphur dioxide. It was then discovered that crushed limestone neutralized the soil which was made acidic from the sulphur dioxide. Once neutralized, vegetation was able to grow. The book also discusses how the mining industry was responsible for the large amounts of sulphur dioxide in the Sudbury area. This was because of the process of smelting ores to extract the desired metals. The sulphur dioxide caused the soil to become too acidic and therefore killed all vegetation.
