Young lady wearing an off-the shoulder pleated white satin gown. The bodice is shirred, sleeves short, and the V-shaped waistline is barely visible. The subject is looking directly at the viewer, and her dark brown hair is parted in the middle and looped to the back of her head, covering her ears. She wears no jewelry. The shape of the portrait is oval, although the frame is a rectangle.

Alethia Beale Allen was born on June 10, 1835, to US Representative Robert Allen and Alethia Van Horn Lapsley Allen. She died on July 6, 1854, and is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Lebanon.
