Description

This oil on canvas portrait portrays the likeness, in three-quarter aspect, of a young woman dressed in a black, off the shoulder gown and wearing a long gold chain necklace. She has a warm skin tone, a high forehead with dark brown hair parted in the middle, dark brown eyes, Aquiline nose, and a strong chin. The young woman is resting her hand on the chair or sofa she is sitting on. The background of the painting is very dark. Brushstrokes are very fine as in the classic style.

Provenance

Notes

The portrait was painted from life of its subject, Caroline Colbert Foster, and hung in her home in Madison, GA, until her death. It then hung in the home of her son Frederick Colbert Foster and his wife Julia Fort Floyd Foster until their deaths, at which time it went to my grandmother Sarah Fannin Foster Stovall in Athens, GA. When my grandmother died, the portrait came to me, Anne Wade Rittenberry, and it has hung in our home for over 50 years.
