Joe Van Sickle studied at Herron School of Art and graduated in 1943. He was director of Art at Watkins Institute, taught at Belmont and Vanderbilt, and had a studio and taught privately in Nashville, Tennessee. This portrait is of his wife, Marilyn, who taught drama at Cohn High School in Nashville and passed away soon after Joe did. The Tennessee State Museum has one of his paintings. Van Sickle was the main force in creating the Nashville Artist's Guild.
