General Notes

Note

Mary "Carty" McCarty was born on August 9, 1936, to Edgar Leon McCarty Jr. and Gladys Hamilton McCarty. She married Brigadier General James Daniel Richardson Roberts Sr. and they had three children. Carty dedicated many years of service to the Oaklands Association Inc., where she played a pivotal role in preserving local history. She served as President of the Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2002, during which she helped secure funding for the Visitors Center, including the Maney Ballroom. This addition provided much-needed space for conferences, social events, weddings, offices, and the Mansion Gift Shop. She continued her service with multiple terms as Treasurer and contributed as a member of the Executive and Finance Committees while also volunteering as a docent. Beyond Oaklands, Carty was a member of Charity Circle and the Craddock Book Club. She was an early supporter member of the Murfreesboro Little Theatre and she and Jim Rich renovated the historic Palmer House on Main Street. A devoted member of Central Christian Church, she served as an Elder and chaired the 100th Anniversary Committee. She died in 2025 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
