Mary Ann, affectionately known as Polly, was born on April 26, 1781, in Virginia to General Daniel Smith and Sarah Michie Smith. She married at a young age to Samuel Donelson, Rachel Donelson Jackson's youngest brother, and had three boys before losing her husband to pneumonia. She would later marry James Sanders and have nine more children. She died in 1857 and is buried in Rock Castle Cemetery in Hendersonville.
