Newell Sanders was born in Owen County, Indiana, on July 12, 1850, to John Sanders and Miriam Coffey Sanders. He attended local schools and graduated from the University of Indiana in 1873. That year, he married Mary Corinne Dodds. Sanders owned and operated a bookstore in Bloomington after graduation until he moved to Chattanooga in 1877. In Chattanooga, he began manufacturing agricultural tools. Sanders twice established, built up, and sold agricultural manufactories, first the Chattanooga Plow Company and later, the Newell Sanders Plow Company. He served on the Chattanooga School Board from 1881 to 1882. He then was elected as an alderman, serving from 1882-1886. In 1912, he was appointed by Gov. Ben Hooper to serve out the remaining term of US Senator Robert Love Taylor, who died that year. After his term ended in 1913, Sanders returned to his manufacturing work, continuing until retirement in 1927. His wife died in 1929. Sanders died on January 26, 1939, and is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga.
