Note

Sanna D'Shiel Black (1880-1969) was the wife of Alexander Pitzer Ward (1879-1954) and sister-in-law of the artist. Her father was the noted Tennessee doctor, Charles Alban Black, and Virginia D'Shiel Robertson (also in this collection). Her grandfather was the Rev. Sam Black of Sam Black Church, WV, and great-great granddaughter of Ensign William "Grandpa Billy" McClung (1738-1833) who was the first English settler in West Virginia. She died in 1969 and is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The painting hung in Sanna and Pit's home in San Jose until Sanna's death and now hangs in her grandson's home.
