Context

In the so-called “Compensation” of 1867, the now independent states of Austria and Hungary were linked by a common monarch and a common finance, foreign and war ministry. The common currency remained, and the Austrian National Bank was converted into the Austro-Hungarian Bank with branches in Vienna and Budapest in 1878.
