Photograph published in the 45th Division News,15 April 1944, Vol. IV, No.35, Caption "What's a beachhead without a canoe, asked Tech Sgt. Robert Townsend, Alva, OK, and 2nd Lt. Wallace Brondstatter, Wichita Falls, TX, set about to make one out of plywood and debris from bombed buildings. The pair glued together the Thunderbird I. As may have been suspected, mishap befell the craft. A short distance from shore, he was caught in an air raid and falling flak punctured the plywood boat. It sank. This photograph is the second venture after the canoe was patched. The Lt. is again at the paddle."Made/Created
