Distinguished Flying Cross Citation for Paul Avritt (Weatherford, Oklahoma)

Context

Lieutenant Avritt was an artillery aerial observer pilot. On August 30, 1944, Avritt noticed a downed Spitfire in a field behind enemy lines. In his unarmored L4 "Grasshopper", Avritt landed in the field to rescue the Spitfire pilot, R.G. Fisher of the Royal New Zealand Airforce. He returned back to friendly lines, saving Fisher. Weeks later, Avritt was shot down and died from his wounds.
