Description

Nazi flag signed by soldiers of Headquarters Company 160th Field Artillery with a Thunderbird insignia sewn in the center of the swastika

Context

The flag was captured by Dewey Cooper, Jr. in Salerno, Italy after the 45th overran a German command post. He kept the flag as a war memento, and he decided to hand letter the names of the men he served with after the landing at Anzio, Italy. He attempted to keep the record as up to date as he possibly could during his time in combat. Cooper did so until he was sent home on a hospital ship and separated from the service.
