The First Church of Taunton was said to be founded in 1637 when a group of Puritans, among them Elizabeth Pole, settled in the area now known as Taunton after purchasing it from Massasoit. The first meeting house was built sometime before 1637, and the second, third, and fourth meeting houses were erected over the years. The fourth and current meeting house was first constructed in 1829-1830.
The church was known as the First Church of Christ until 1791, the First Congregational Society from 1791 to 1821, and the First Congregational Society (Unitarian) from 1821 to 1937, until becoming in 1937 the First Parish Church in Taunton, the name which remains today.Archive Details
