Context

The Richmond family originated in Brittany, France. In America John Richmond was a large landholder and quite wealthy for that time. Many of the heirs followed trades professions while others occupied land in other sections of the country. In many states they have built towns that bear the family name. They erected the first grist and saw mills, foundries, cotton and woolen mills, rope walks and paper manufactories later built railroads and established sail and steamboat lines. They were very prominent in the Colonial Wars, Revolution and Civil War. They are a true testament to their family motto “Resolve Well and Persevere.”
