Context

Richard and Frances Dighton Williams came to America about 1636. Richard Williams was very involved in Taunton affairs and came to be known as “The Father of Taunton”. He was among the first purchasers of the Cohannet Purchase, the North Purchase, and the South Purchase, now comprising collectively of Taunton, Raynham, Berkley, Norton, Mansfield, Easton and Dighton. His many descendants include notable figures like his son Joseph Williams, Sr. (1641-1692) and his grandson George Williams (1717-1803). The family spread throughout the region. He was one of the original shareholders in the Iron Works of Taunton and received income from it until 1691.
