Context
Police officers of the rank of inspector and above traditionally have worn uniforms with a number of differences to those of constables and sergeants. This extended to the type of gloves worn. Police Forces followed the military example of issuing officers with brown coloured leather gloves, which were given to inspectors and above, the lower ranks having black ones. In more recent years with the widespread abandonment of tunics and more dress style uniforms, it has become normal practice for all officers to have black gloves regardless of rank. Occasionally at formal or ceremonial events very senior officers are still seen wearing brown gloves. This particular pair probably date from the 1970s.
