Description

Two sets of chrome plated metal numbers used to make the police officer number "121". Each number has a hairpin shaped wire retaining clip for attaching to an item of uniform.

Use

For attaching to a tunic or epaulettes to identify a police officer through their unique number.

Context

These numbers were worn by PC Walter Guy Paviour who joined East Sussex Constabulary in 1930. He would have had two sets for each uniform tunic, coat or cape he was issued with. Prior to the 1950s these would have been displayed on the collar of the closed neck tunics then worn, but once open necked tunics were introduced, they would have been worn on epaulettes attached to the tunic. PC Paviour served as a constable until at least 1959 so would have worn both types of uniform.
