Context

These "blue labels" as they were known, were left on unattended vehicles by police officers, when a vehicle was in contravention of a minor motoring offence. This would include parking violations in the days before officers had parking tickets, no road tax or the vehicle being in some form of un- roadworthy condition. The officer would complete the details on the label and the driver was required to attend a police station where their details would be taken and they would be reported for an offence and in due course be summonsed to appear at court. This particular label has the address of John Street Police Station which opened in 1965 and is for Brighton Borough Police which was amalgamated into the new Sussex Constabulary in 1968. It therefore dates to between 1965 and 1967. The "blue label" system was still in use in Sussex Police in the 1990s.
