Context
This cap badge was adopted by Brighton Police for constables and sergeants c1935 at the same time a star shaped badge was adopted for inspectors and above. Before this lower ranks had used a variety of shield shaped badges, although most officers were on foot patrol and did not have caps. This changed in the 1930s as more vehicles were purchased and more officers taught to drive, 163 in two years. Other than the Brighton specific elements, this badge is of a generic design that was widely adopted in the UK in the mid 1930s, this probably was a result of the efforts by the Home Office to standardise police uniform and insignia following the 1934 Dixon Committee Report.
These badges continued to be used until 1952 after which a very similar badge, with a Queen's Crown was worn until Brighton Police was amalgamated into Sussex Constabulary in 1968.
