Context

Holsters of this type are intended to be worn with a British army officer's Sam Brown style belt. During this period in the field revolvers would have been carried in webbing or canvass holsters. This particular example was used by Angus Cargill who was the chief constable of Hastings Police from 1942 until 1954. In 1944 he was given the rank of Lt. Colonel and seconded to the 21st Army Group under General Montgomery. He was one of a number of UK senior police officers recruited to plan for the policing arrangements in liberated Europe and occupied Germany. After the Allies moved to West Berlin following the German surrender he was responsible for organising the civil policing in the British sector. In this capacity he probably used this holster to carry a revolver when in an army dress uniform, carried on his Sam Browne belt (item 2573).
