Context
This selection of insignia is thought to represent at least some of the insignia that was worn by John Dibley during his career with East Sussex Constabulary and later Sussex Constabulary/Sussex Police from 1949 to 1989. It is not known whether he put it together or whether he actually wore any of the items. However the number "268" was his original East Sussex Constabulary collar number and it is likely that the rarer assistant chief constable's epaulette was definitely his, a role he served in between 1976 and 1989. This would not have been a comprehensive list of insignia he would have worn, as there are noticeable gaps, such as a King's Crown helmet plate and any Sussex Constabulary insignia. Not only that but retiring in 1989 he would not have worn the Sussex Police enamelled all ranks cap badge that was only introduced in 1995.
