Context
In 1967 the then chief constable of East Sussex Constabulary, George Terry began to open up some specialist roles for women and this included the Traffic Department. The first two women traffic officers in East Sussex were WPC Hazel Walters and WPC Joy Christian, who patrolled together in a fully marked police MG sport's car. Female Traffic Officers continued within the new Sussex Constabulary in 1968 and in September 1969 Hazel and Joy attended an advanced driving course run by Kent Police and became the first women officers in Sussex to hold this qualification. At that time Sussex Constabulary sent officers to Kent for advanced driver training.
