Context

At the time this badge was in use constables and sergeants (usually referred to as "other ranks") were issued with plainer cap badges than inspectors and above, who wore star shaped badges with blue enamel rings. The use of the "Queen's" or St Edward's Crown on this badge dates it to between 1952 and 1967, and it replaced an almost identical badge topped with a King's Crown. In 1967 East Sussex Constabulary was renamed "East Sussex Police" and identical cap badges to the one pictured were adopted, but replacing "Constabulary" with "Police". These badges marked "Police" are believed to only have been issued to new officers, those already serving keeping their existing badges.
