Context
These papers show the process by which a potential candidate applied for a position as a constable in East Sussex Constabulary in the 1890's. They were found some years ago at Uckfield Police Station, along with another set of application papers They show that up to four referees were required and that the candidate also had to supply a medical declaration witnessed by a priest or magistrate. There is emphasis on the medical history of applicant's parents, the assumption being that if they were healthy, then the applicant would be as well. The applicant was required to agree to the conditions of service before being accepted and the last stage go this initial process was a medical examination.
In this particular case the application failed because James Lupton failed to attend his medical examination on 6th June 1893. There is nothing to indicate the reason for this.
This collection of papers includes three handwritten letters from James Lupton. The first is dated 17th April 1893 and has him chasing up an application he originally made in 1890. The second dated 20th April 1893 was returned with the application forms and included a previous testimonial letter. The third letter is dated 1st June 1893 and is a request for a medical examination appointment so that his application can be progressed.
It is of note that James Lupton was apparently very keen to join East Sussex Constabulary but that he subsequently failed to attend the medical examination that he was so eager to arrange. The reasons for this will probably never be known and we can only speculate.
