Context

These medals were awarded to Walter Paviour who was a long serving police constable in East Sussex Constabulary. He joined the force on 9th December 1930 and is mentioned in a newspaper report as still serving as late as 1959. The Defence Medal would have been awarded for wartime police service as it is known that PC Paviour continued police duties during the war from some of his pocket notebooks (Items 2543 and 2544). The Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was originally awarded after 22 years service, having been instituted in 1951, by George VI. This particular one is a Queen Elizabeth II example and was most likely awarded in 1953, given Walter Paviour's month of joining the police.
