Context
These medals were awarded to Keir Angel who was a long serving police officer in East Sussex Constabulary and who went onto serve in Sussex Constabulary/Police retiring as a Superintendent. Amongst other things, whilst a Detective Inspector in East Sussex Constabulary, he was involved in the arrangements for the visit of President Kennedy to Birch Grove House, in June 1963, the home of the Prime Minister Harold McMillan.
The Defence Medal was probably awarded for wartime police service and the War Medal would have been awarded as a member of the armed forces. The Silver Jubilee Medal would have been awarded to commemorate the 1977 Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and the Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal after 22 years service. This last medal is inscribed "Inspr" and therefore dates from Keir Angel's East Sussex Constabulary service, as when he prepared a history of the force in 1967 he was a chief inspector.
