Context
At the start of the 20th century Hastings Police officers wore the letter "H" on each side of their tunic collars next to their number. By the 1920s these letters were no longer used and instead small shield badges depicting the Borough coat of arms were worn on tunic epaulettes. This practice continued with the introduction of open necked tunics in the 1950s, when many other police forces began to wear such insignia on the lapels.
At some time after 1953 it was decided that Hastings Police had been using the wrong shaped shield on their insignia and a revised version was adopted for both headwear badges and those worn on the epaulettes. The pair shown here are the later version and probably date from the mid 1950s until 1967
