Context

In 1912 the Judges of the King's Bench were asked by the Home Secretary to compile a set of guidelines for the police regarding the questioning of suspects and the obtaining from them statements, including confessions. This was to prevent valuable evidence being found to be inadmissible in court. These guidelines became known as "Judges Rules" and were subsequently revised in 1918, and re issued in 1934 and 1964. They were replaced in 1984 by Code C of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act Codes of Practice. This aid memoire was produced by "Police Review" magazine for private purchase by officers some time after 1967 and probably dates to the 1970s. The size suggests it was designed to fit inside a pocket notebook. It was owned by an officer in Sussex Police, who previously served in East Sussex Constabulary and Sussex Constabulary.
