Context

Buttons of this size are normally used on officer's tunics and the Liver Bird identifies it as having come from Liverpool Police. It belonged to Angus Cargill the chief constable of Hastings from 1942 until 1954. Prior to being appointed in Hastings he had served in Liverpool Police from 1928 and this button probably came from one of his tunics. After 1934 Liverpool Police started using chrome plated badges instead of white metal ones and they probably adopted chrome plated buttons at the same time.
