Context
As an alternative to wearing full size medals on formal dinning wear, much lighter miniature sets are available. This set belonged to Sir George Terry who was the Chief Constable of Sussex Police from 1973 until 1983. He had first been appointed as a chief constable in Pembrokeshire in 1958, and became the chief constable of East Sussex Constabulary in 1965. Upon amalgamation in 1968 he became the deputy chief constable of Sussex Constabulary and in 1969, was appointed the chief constable of Lincolnshire Constabulary. However he returned to Sussex upon the death of the then chief constable Christopher Williams in 1973. He was knighted in 1982.
Sir George was awarded his war time medals for service in Italy with the Northamptonshire Regiment. He had been a constable in Birmingham City Police from 1940 and the Defence Medal could either have been for police or military service during the war.
