This photograph shows a Brighton Borough Police constable in a summer uniform, complete with white helmet and white gloves. The badge on the helmet has a Queen's Crown, dating it to after 1952, and the vehicles and civilian clothing appear to date from the 1950s. The officer is thought to be PC 100 Herbert Hother, who joined Brighton Borough Police in 1950, and who went onto serve in Sussex Constabulary and Sussex Police, retiring in 1980 as a sergeant.. This photograph was part of a larger collection of items relating to PC/PS Hother and is unlikely to be of anyone other than him.
Tunics such as the one in the photograph were worn in Brighton Borough Police from 1952 until the 1960s, when they were replaced with one with an additional two waist pockets and a belt.
