Description
A black and white original photographic print (21.5 cm x 16.7 cm) of three Special Constabulary sergeants being congratulated by a man in a civilian coat, who is shaking the hand of one of them. Written in ink on rear "William Frederick Turner (centre) being presented congratulated" the word presented has a line through it.
Context
A related newspaper article and another photograph explains that the three officers are William Turner, Bruce Ferguson-Cooke and William Smith, all members of the Special Constabulary at Brighton who had been promoted to the rank of sergeant, in February 1969. At that time Brighton Police were part of Sussex Constabulary, having been amalgamated in 1968. However detail from the article shows that all three of these officers had previously been long serving members of the Brighton Borough Police Special Constabulary. The article mentions all three being congratulated by the Divisional Special Constabulary Commandant Walter Friend, and he is thought to be the fourth man in the photograph. Sergeant Turner is the officer having his hand shook and then left to right are Sergeant Smith and Sergeant Ferguson-Cooke.
