Description

A black and white original photographic print (16.4 cm x 12.1 cm) of a special constable and a special constabulary sergeant at the front desk of Brighton Police station in John Street c1969, the sergeant apparently giving the constable instructions from a piece of paper. There are two holes on the left hand side from a hole punch and on the rear is handwritten in ink "Sgt. W.F. Turner"

Context

We know that the sergeant in this picture is William Frederick Turner who was a long serving special constable, serving in both Brighton Borough Police and later Sussex Constabulary, eventually reaching the rank of Inspector. This photograph is thought to date from 1969, the year that he first became a sergeant. The detail shown on the cuff of the sleeve of his tunic identifies it as a Brighton Borough Police issue example, rather than those used by Sussex Constabulary from 1968. The shoulder flash though is a Sussex Constabulary addition, as they were not used by specials in Brighton Borough Police.
