Context

In the late 1940s and early 1950s police forces began to adopt open necked tunics for male constables and sergeants. This necessitated the use of light blue coloured shirts with collars and black neck ties for day use. In some police areas the older closed neck tunics were still retained for night duty, for some years. The ties used required properly tying. It was only in the 1980s that increased concern over officer safety lead to the adoption of clip on ties. This particular example was used by an officer who served in both Brighton Borough Police and later Sussex Constabulary/Police and most likely dates from the 1970s.
