Context

Though police tunics have used horn and composite buttons by the 20th century they were normally reserved for use on outer clothing given its use at night. The rationale may have been that they did not reflect light in the same way that the white metal or chrome badges used on tunics did. These buttons are of generic type that could have been used anywhere. They were in the possession of Angus Cargill the chief Constable of Hastings from 1942 until 1954. Being plain they may well relate to his time in Liverpool Police as a constable or sergeant and if so would have been worn on an overcoat.
