To give an overview of organisation within the new Sussex ConstabularyContext
The 1964 Police Act gave the Home Secretary powers to compel the amalgamations of small police forces into larger ones, in order to improve efficiency and accountability, following recommendations by the 1960 Royal Commission enquiry into the Police. In May 1966 it was announced that the five police forces in Sussex were to be amalgamated, as well as over another hundred other police forces. From then and through into 1967 a great deal of planning took place into how the new Sussex Constabulary was to be organised and run. The chief constable of West Sussex Thomas Christopher Williams was designated to head the new force with the chief constable of East Sussex Constabulary, George Terry, to be his deputy.
Copies of this document dated 30th October 1967 were given to all members of staff and summarise how the new Sussex Constabulary was to be organised. It gives a breakdown of the numbers of officers in each rank, the organisational structure and details such as the uniform issued to each officer, as well as summarising areas such as accommodation, leave and welfare, plus much more. It is a very interesting document for giving an insight into how Sussex Constabulary was initially organised.
