Context

Police officers have long carried pocket sized guides to assist them with various aspects of policing and as time went by and the role became more complicated, the need for more aide memories increased. The three here are typical of some of the things officers would carry in the late 1980s and relate to: racially motivated incidents, the offence codes for issuing fixed penalty notices for traffic offences, and guidance for officers when interviewed re discipline offences. These are all of a size to be easily carried in a pocket and were often put in police pocket notebooks. These particular ones were carried by WPS BT155 Myra Thomas at Brighton in the late 1980s in her official handbag (item 2233), along with other paperwork and equipment. In more recent years with the adoption of smart devices the use of physical pocket guides had diminished with Sussex Police. Officers can now access a raft of information via these devices and relevant apps.
