Until 1995 sergeants and constables in Sussex Police wore different cap/hat badges than senior officers inspector and above, which were plain chrome plated round badges topped with a crown. In 1995 a new enamelled badge for all ranks was adopted, with the a Sussex Police coat of arms centre. This was the first cap/hat badge to display the coat of arms, which though granted in 1969 had only previously been used on lapel badges.
The first version of the enamelled coat of arms badge had a solid centre but in 2002 a voided version was introduced such as the one pictured. These were made by both Firmin and Toye Kenning Spencer. This particular badge has a flimsy slider attachment which has broken and may be an earlier version of those made by Toye, the later ones being much more robust.
