Context
In around 2010 Sussex Police adopted this style of handcuffs, the ASP Model 100, to replace its Chubb Detainer models. The Chubbs in service were beginning to get old and due to poor maintenance some had begun to jam shut. At that time Sussex Police were still unwilling to adopt a rigid fixed handcuff and decided to replace the Chubbs which were expensive with the more affordable ASP 100. These handcuffs were made of a combination of steel and plastic polymer which made them light. The polymer was moulded over a steel Skelton to give strength. The Chubbs were not recalled but all new recruits were issued with the ASP model and any replacement handcuffs were of the new type.
Whilst perfectly serviceable the ASP handcuffs did have a tendency to bend which together with their light weight gave the impression of being inexpensive. They remained in service until 2018 by which time they had replaced most of the Chubb models in service. In that year Sussex Police finally adopted rigid handcuffs and began training all officers in their use, being one of the last UK police e forces to do so.
