Context

Clips such as this were usually worn in pairs on a 28-30mm wide leather belt for use on uniform trousers or a uniform skirt. They were used to attach a personal radio to such belts. The Burndept radios used in Sussex Police from the 1970s and the Motorola radios that replaced them in the 1980s, had metal rings attached to each side to enable them to be carried either on a neck strap or on belt clips such as this. Over time as nylon belt holders became more common, these clips continued to be issued, but were used to attach keys to belts instead. More modern radios were then introduced with could be attached directly to items of uniform by means of special clip attachments. Over time the black paint on this example's metal clip has worn off.
