Context

In 1995 Sussex Police adopted a new cap badge featuring a coloured enamel Sussex Police coat of arms, for all ranks which replaced the "EIIR" versions previously worn. At the same time a new coat of arms cloth badge, like this, was introduced replacing the previous "EIIR" one. This style of badge was initially used for a new style of tight knit pullovers introduced at the same time and the half length car coat outer jackets, then in use. Later the badge was sewn onto stab vest covers and other items of clothing, although a smaller rectangular badge without the wording "Police", was also used. From at least 2010, a circular embroidered non reflective badge featuring just the star shaped badge and no additional wording has also been used. However it seems to have been restricted to clothing used by civilian uniformed members of staff, in particular Enquiry Office Assistants and was used on pullovers and fleeces issued to them. The museum also has a stab vest intended for a "Police Chaplain" which has one of these badges on the cover. In recent years these badges have largely been discontinued, with outer jackets and stab vest covers in Sussex Police, simply using more generic "Police" badges, presumably as a cost cutting measure. Occasionally velcro attached printed worded strip badges are also worn on outer garments, identifying the station, division or unit of the wearer.
