Context

In 1974 Sussex Constabulary changed its name to Sussex Police to reflect a more modern service, and consequently new badges were adopted for helmets and caps to reflect this. In effect the same type of badges as used previously were retained but the word "constabulary" was replaced with "police". The type of badge picture was used by male constables and sergeants on their caps and the female equivalents, the ranks of inspector and above having a star shaped badge. These cap badges were used until 1995 when Sussex Police adopted an enamelled cap badge for all ranks with the "EIIR" cypher being replaced with the Sussex Police coat of arms.
