Context

In 1994, after a poll of officers, Sussex Police changed from light blue coloured uniform shirts for male constables and sergeants to white ones. These continued to be worn until 2010 when black coloured polo shirts were introduced, as part of a gender neutral uniform. However some specialist uniform departments were also issued with dark blue coloured shirts, as they were less likely to become dirty. This included dog handlers, who were initially issued with these shirts for training but went onto wear them for normal duty as well. They were replaced in 2010 with the introduction of the black polo shirt for all uniform officers. This particular shirt was issued to PC Steve Williams who was a dog handler from March 1997 until his retirement in January 2013, and has his warrant number "W627" embroidered on the slider style epaulettes.
