Context

Until the mid 1980s the standard outer wear for Sussex Police officers was a there quarter length rain coat with numbers on epaulettes. Then a more practical shorter length coat was adopted, with a removable quilted liner, which was especially more useful when getting in and out of vehicles. This coat did not have epaulettes and the officer's number was displayed over a breast pocket on the left side. On the front of this pocket was sewn a Sussex Police embroidered "EIIR" cloth badge as shown. These badges were also sewn onto blue woollen "V" neck pullovers without epaulettes then in use and then the later army style "V" neck pullover with shoulder and elbow patches, and epaulette loops. This style of badge was replaced in 1995 with another displaying the Sussex Police coat of arms.
