Context
The "Resusciade" face shield was actually invented by a serving Sussex Constabulary officer PC Dan Barker from Worthing, as reported in the January 1969 edition of the force newspaper "Patrol". It allowed the safe provision of mouth to mouth resuscitation without the risk of contamination by means of a one way valve and a small nylon sheet. It was put into production by a Kent based company 'Protex". Sussex Constabulary initially purchased these shields for issuing to all of their patrol vehicles but in time they were issued to all officers. In the 1990s they were supplied in a small belt pouch together with a pair of disposable gloves. This particular example was carried by WPS BT155 Myra Thomas at Brighton in the late 1980s in her official handbag (item 2233), along with other paperwork and equipment.
