Context

In the mid to late 1970s Sussex Police stopped using white coloured motorcycle helmets and adopted a similar design coloured bright yellow. This colour was also used on the fairings of some of the force traffic motorcycles. As with the white helmets, these yellow ones had studs on the front for either attaching a peak or a transparent perspex visor. These helmets were used by both traffic motorcyclists and those using lightweight motorycles for patrol work. They continued to be used until the late 1980s/early 1990s when they were replaced with full face helmets for traffic officers. This particular example was donated by ex Traffic Department motorcyclist Graham Shipway and the handwritten "AS162" inside is his warrant number.
