For an officer to record their duties and any relevant information.Context
Despite the adoption of electronic mobile devices Sussex Police officers are still issued with pocket notebooks for recording some information, although they are encouraged to use their handheld devices as much as possible using various Apps to record most interactions with the public. Consequently notebooks are not used to anything like the same extent they were in the past. There are even note taking facilities on mobile devices which in time may well replace paper notebooks altogether.
This particular notebook is unissued and is of a type currently used in Sussex for uniform officers. Apart from the badge on the front and the number of pages, it is almost identical to those first issued in Sussex Constabulary in 1968 (see item 2367 ) and when used by an officer would have a black leather cover. In the past notebook numbers would have been allocated at the time of issue, more modern notebooks already have unique numbers printed on them like this one.
