Context

Police officers have long carried pocket sized guides to assist them with various aspects of policing and as time went by and the role became more complicated, the need for more aide memoires increased. This particular one contains the numerous numerical codes for updating a control room with the type and result of a given incident, as well as the status of that officer. These codes were used to enable the control room to result incident logs and monitor what various police units status was so that available units could be assigned to new incidents. In the late 1980s and early 1990s they were mainly used by mobile officers to update the force control room. It was only in the later 1990s that they were used to update what became the Area Control Rooms. Over time officers in vehicles could update their status via mobile data terminals, and more recently all officers can do so via their Airwave radios, ensuring that a control room can easily monitor what units are on duty and which ones are available. This particular one was carried by WPS BT155 Myra Thomas at Brighton in the late 1980s in her official handbag (item 2233), along with other paperwork and equipment. These particular codes have been superseded by newer ones.
