Context
In the mid 1970s and early 1980s, this style of torch was issued to officers in Sussex Police for use at night. The numbers on it indicate that it is of a type that was used by the military as they are NATO stock numbers. By the 1980s many officers in Sussex and elsewhere were purchasing their own torches, especially those made by Maglite, and eventually in the mid 1990s Sussex Police began to issue Maglites to officers as part of their standard equipment.
