For a Sussex Police constable to wear on their uniformContext
In September 2018 Sussex Police abandoned the use of its old warrant numbering system of "C" for male officers and "D" for female officers and instead adopted gender neutral numbers for all new recruits beginning with numbers prefixed "EA". After the first 999 numbers are issued the prefix will change to "EB" and so on. As well as all new officers being given "EA" numbers, any existing officer that wanted to have a gender neural number was also given the option of being allocated one.
At the same time as the adoption of these new warrant numbers Sussex Police adopted a new style of epaulette. Older style tongue shaped ones were replaced with a sleeve style, that also was embroidered with the Sussex Police coat of arms badge. The reason for the change was the creation of a joint uniform store with Surrey Police, Surrey already using this type of epaulette. The older Sussex style was simply embroidered with the officers number in silver thread with no badge, using exactly the same letter and number font as had been used on the metal versions. The newer style uses a plainer font in silver thread, though not always as shiny as on these examples.
These were issued to PC Annabella Perfect who as a Transgender Non Binary and Intersex Liaison Officer, also had a number of special LGBT plus epaulettes commissioned ( items 2418, 2419, 2420). The ones shown here are a pair of her standard day to day ones as used by all constables, all be it with unique numbers.
